Successful contractors market themselves very well. This strategy is called “branding.” Nike, Apple, Microsoft, and Nestle are companies that market well and have a unique brand and logo. You need to start thinking along the same lines about yourself. What is your brand? What are the special skills and abilities you bring to the job market?
To begin your personal branding, all documents in the “job packet” must look the same. The heading, font style, and font size must be the same on all documents. (See Appendix D for sample résumé, cover letters, and stellar references.) This presents a professional image to the company upon presentation.
There are additional ways to create a personal brand:
a.Professional image. Company dress codes range from business casuals to business suits. Dress professionally until you know what is acceptable, and pay attention to the details. This means, people notice teeth, jewelry, and nails. Many organizations are conservative and like the employee to adhere to a “proper” dress code. It is better to be overdressed than underdressed. You never know when you will get an opportunity or that “big chance” and you don’t want to get caught off guard.
b.Meet and greet. It is important to know the “professional” protocol when meeting and greeting other professionals. This starts with the importance of a good handshake, reciting an elevator speech, and giving and asking for a business card.
c.Online image. Companies do check the prospective employee’s online image. It is important to Google yourself and review what turns up. Creating a professional online image is essential and will be discussed in the next chapter.
